Try not to panic, Davis hamstring injury is not the end of the world

The news of Titans’ rookie WR Corey Davis leaving practice due to a hamstring injury sent shock waves and panic across social media. This is the last thing Titans fans want to hear regarding their first-round pick. Davis will undergo an MRI and further details will be made available following the results.

Davis – who missed the first day of training camp due to contract dispute – had been looking sharp and steady throughout practices. He was crushing the one-on-one drills. From the video clips I watched, Davis looked the part of a true WR1. The two main highlights that stood out were his juggling catch over CB LeShaun Sims and his ankle breaking route against CB Logan Ryan, that resulted in a big gain.

Davis’ play generated a lot of excitement for Titans fans, which is why his injury triggered fan panic and concern.

The injury raised a bevy of thoughts in my mind: Is the injury major? Which leg was it? Is it the same leg that Davis had ankle surgery on? Is it the other leg due to Davis compensating for lingering ankle pain? Is this why he was holding out in the first place?

My mind was racing, but I slowed it down because this is not the same old Titans. Davis is not going to fall into the category of past high selected WRs that doomed this franchise.

Titans fans should have faith that the severity of the injury will not be bad. Hamstring injuries are very common in most sports, but especially in football. Even more common in players who play a position which requires a lot of acceleration/deceleration, starts/stops, and zigs/zags. That workload is heavy and puts strain on the hamstrings, resulting in injuries. Davis does all those things – and does them very well. Odds are he injured in while trying to execute a move mid route to shake the DB.

An MRI on his hamstring doesn’t signal the end of the world. It will highlight the grade of injury and allow Titans training staff to develop a plan of action. RB DeMarco Murray is also sidelined with a sore hamstring – but he’s day to day. The depth at the running back position relieved some of the concern about Murray – so how about the depth at the receiver position?

The WR depth may be the deepest on this Titans team. A Davis injury that would result in him missing more than just a few days will not derail this team. Veteran WRs Eric Decker and Rishard Matthews will keep the offense running smoothly. Rookie WR Taywan Taylor’s electric playmaking ability has shown he can step in and be effective. There is still Tajae Sharpe and (possibly) Harry Douglas that can fill in and  make plays.

The Titans have players that can catch the football – and I didn’t even mention TEs Delanie Walker and Jonnu Smith. Head Coach Mike Mularkey doesn’t seem panicked as he knows these injuries are common in football. QB Marcus Mariota remains cool as a cucumber. When asked about the Davis injury, he knows that’s something out of his control. He stated the truth – he has to work with who he has.

And who Mariota has this season is a lot more than what he had last season.

Titans fans – R-E-L-A-X. Davis is going to be fine. He’ll recover. This isn’t a red flag that he will be injury prone. This is a common injury – especially in training camp. In the meanwhile, have confidence in the WR group that is very capable to getting the job done. He suffered a hamstring injury – things could be much, much worse. Ask Mike Williams, Sterling Shepard, or Will Fuller.

Their seasons are in jeopardy. Davis’ season is not.

The Titans will be fine. Trust that they will be.

Either way, the team is committed to “Forge Ahead” with the soldiers they have.
